How to start in motorcycle racing.

1. Join your district motorcycle club. Cost with the Murwillumbah District Motorcycle Club is as follows: Junior $20.00, Senior $30.00, Family $40.00 for one years membership. All memberships expire each year on 31 December. Keep your affiliation certificate for licence application and proof of membership at all race days.

2. Obtain a licence to race. Juniors and Seniors must undertake a knowledge test. Then if you do not have a RTA motorcycle licence, you must undertake a practical riding test. These are required to obtain a competition licence. This test booklet is valid for two years and must be produced on request at any race day, if you require a one day licence.

3. Complete the paperwork for the competition licence Include Club affiliation certificate or club receipt, photocopy of knowledge and practical riding test, copy of birth certificate, two passport size photos and a cheque for licence fee. For Seniors between the ages of 16 Ð 18 years include a copy of birth certificate or drivers licence. All applicants under the age of 18 must have their application signed by a parent or guardian. 4. Remember there is testing for drugs in motorcycle racing at all levels If you take drugs for asthma etc a certificate from your doctor must be completed and sent with your license application. No alcohol is permitted at any race or practice days.

5. Junior clothing rules for Racing 7.1.1 Helmets, Clothing, Gloves and Footwear 7.1.1.1 No competitor may practice, start or compete in any motorcross competition unless wearing: a) An approved and correctly fitting helmet which must:

1) Carry the Standards Association of Australia "AS 1698" label; or

2) Be approved under Rule 01.69 & 01.70 of the FIM Technical Rules. b) Trousers of leather or synthetic material of similar durability. Trousers of other than leather must be non-combustible and fitted with a lining. c) A jersey which: 1) Must be a close knit fabric of natural or synthetic fibre; and 2) Must be a snug fit and provide protection against abrasion to the body and arms. d) Footwear which must: 1) Be of recognized motorcross type; 2) Be constructed of leather, plastic or other similar durable material; and 3) Be of a length that must at least cover _ of the length of the lower leg, with the rider in a racing position on the machine. e) Gloves of leather or other material of similar or greater durability. f) Goggles or visors as specified in rule 7.1.3 7.1.2

7.1.3 Goggles & Visors 7.1.3.1 Spectacles, protective goggles, helmet visors and tear-offs may be worn provided, the rest is in your Manual of motorsport, or go to Motorcycling Aust website.
